A shocking incident unfolded on the New York City subway, where 33-year-old Sebastian Zapeta was charged with murder and arson after allegedly setting a woman on fire while she was asleep. This tragic event occurred on the morning of 22 December 2024 at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station.
Details of the Incident
Eyewitnesses reported that a woman, who remains unidentified, was seated on a stationary F train when the horrific act took place around 7.30am (8.30pm SGT). According to the New York Police Department, Zapeta used a lighter to ignite the woman’s clothing without any prior interaction. The authorities stated that the two did not know each other.
Police Response and Arrest
Responding swiftly, police officers on patrol at the station rushed to the train car, only to find the woman engulfed in flames. Using fire extinguishers, they extinguished the fire, but sadly, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Approximately six hours later, Zapeta was apprehended on another subway train, still in possession of a lighter. He had entered the U.S. unlawfully in 2018, was deported shortly after, and it remains unclear when he re-entered the country
Legal Proceedings
Zapeta faces serious charges and is currently in custody. Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez expressed outrage, stating, “The depravity of this horrific crime is beyond comprehension, and my office is committed to bringing the perpetrator to justice.” He emphasised that such a senseless act against a vulnerable individual would warrant the most severe consequences.
