Sabrina Han Charged Following Viral MRT Spitting Incident

A viral video showing a woman spitting water on an MRT train has led to serious legal repercussions for Sabrina Han Meizhen, a 37-year-old Singaporean. The incident, which sparked outrage among commuters, occurred on 16 January 2024 and was widely shared on social media.

The Incident

In the video, Han can be seen drinking from a plastic bottle and then spitting water onto the floor and at fellow passengers. This act reportedly took place at Choa Chu Kang MRT station around 7.57am. The actions were described as causing annoyance to both her victim, named Ng Siew Hiang, and other commuters.

Legal Proceedings

  • On 28 January 2024, Han was charged with one count of public nuisance.
  • She appeared in court via video link, wearing a shirt reminiscent of her outfit in the video.
  • The judge ordered Han to be remanded at the Institute of Mental Health for two weeks for psychiatric assessment.

Possible Penalties

If convicted of public nuisance, Han could face:

  • A fine of up to S$2,000.
  • Imprisonment for up to three months.

Han’s Response

During her court appearance, Han expressed remorse, stating, “I would like to say that I am remorseful and I will control my anxiety attack and not do it again.” The court is scheduled to review her case again on 11 February 2024.
