In a noteworthy announcement, the Traffic Police (TP) and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) revealed that 1,523 speeding tickets issued between 30 October and 8 December 2023 were incorrect. This blunder occurred due to a misconfigured speed limit on three enforcement cameras along the Kallang–Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE).
Speed Limit Error Explained
The speed limit was mistakenly set at 70 km/h instead of the actual limit of 80 km/h. This error was identified during a routine audit in mid-December, prompting immediate action from the authorities. According to TP and LTA, the incorrect speed limit was set by LTA’s contractor during hardware updates.
What This Means for Affected Motorists
- Affected drivers will have all demerit points voided.
- Refunds for any fines already paid will be issued through PayNow or bank transfer.
- The authorities will notify motorists automatically—no action is needed on their part.
The TP stated, “We take a serious view of this matter and are strengthening our checks and controls to prevent similar occurrences.”
Precautions Taken
As part of their response, both TP and LTA have reviewed and checked all other speed cameras across Singapore to ensure compliance with the correct speed limits. This step aims to enhance the reliability of traffic enforcement across the nation.
Motorists with questions or concerns can reach out to the TP via the Singapore Police Force feedback portal.
