Calls for Urgency: WP’s Disciplinary Process for Pritam Singh Under Scrutiny

SINGAPORE: A wave of concern has emerged within the Workers’ Party (WP) regarding the timing of their special cadre members’ conference (SCMC) amid the ongoing disciplinary proceedings against Secretary-General Pritam Singh. The internal debate has been ignited by former WP chairman Dr Tan Bin Seng’s recent appeal for the meeting to occur sooner rather than later.

Concerns Raised by Dr Tan Bin Seng

In a letter to party chair Sylvia Lim dated 30 January 2024, Dr Tan urged the WP’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) to expedite the SCMC process. He expressed doubt over the necessity for the disciplinary panel’s three-month timeline, arguing that the essential issues at stake require prompt and decisive action.

  • Dr Tan emphasised the need for transparency and accountability.
  • He highlighted that many cadres had formally requested an SCMC to address pressing concerns.
  • His urge to convene the conference stems from the belief that delaying it risks giving the impression of procedural stalling.

WP’s Disciplinary Panel

The disciplinary panel, currently analysing Singh’s situation, includes MPs He Ting Ru, Jamus Lim, and former MP Png Eng Huat. They have reached out to party members for their input, similar to the past handling of another case involving former MP Raeesah Khan.

Singh was found guilty last year of lying to Parliament’s Committee of Privileges regarding his handling of Khan’s untruths. Following a parliamentary vote, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong removed Singh from his role as Leader of the Opposition, inviting the party to nominate a replacement—an offer the WP has declined.

The Need for Speed?

Dr Tan’s concerns highlight a growing tension within the party, where the balancing of due process and expediency is under scrutiny. He pointed out that in previous situations, similar meetings were typically convened within a month after a formal request.

As the WP navigates this challenging period, the outcome of Singh’s disciplinary proceedings will not only affect his position but also the broader image of the party. The implications for party leadership and accountability are significant, making the urgency of Dr Tan’s call to action all the more relevant.
