During her visit to Thitu Island, also known as Pag-asa, on 21 February 2024, Senator Risa Hontiveros reiterated the Philippines’ sovereignty over the disputed territory amid ongoing pressures from China. Accompanied by Coast Guard spokesperson Jay Tarriela, the senator engaged with local residents, asserting that Thitu remains a vital part of the Kalayaan Island Group.
National Sovereignty Under Threat
Thitu Island, situated 450 km from the Philippine mainland, is the largest of the islands the Philippines occupies in the Spratly archipelago. Its roughly 400 residents primarily consist of fishermen and their families. However, their livelihoods have become increasingly threatened by the presence of Chinese vessels in the surrounding waters.
Residents’ Struggles and Chinese Dominance
- Filipino fishermen face intimidation from Chinese Coast Guard ships, preventing them from accessing rich fishing grounds.
- Local fisherman Rando Asiado noted that Chinese drones routinely surveil fishing activities, forcing residents to retreat to less productive areas.
- Hontiveros emphasized that the Philippines must continue to push back diplomatically against China’s encroachments.
Calls for Enhanced Defence Relationships
Hontiveros highlighted the importance of strengthening defence ties with other nations, particularly with the United States, while also advocating for joint patrols to safeguard the Philippines’ maritime interests. This call to action reflects a growing concern over China’s expansive claims in the South China Sea, which has been challenged by various international bodies.
The Stakes of Regional Tensions
Hontiveros expressed concerns about potential conflicts involving Taiwan, urging the Philippines to take a proactive stance in fostering peaceful resolutions amid escalating regional tensions. The senator’s remarks come at a time when the Philippines is reassessing its foreign policy strategies, especially following past administrations’ more conciliatory approaches towards China.
“We will never give up the Kalayaan Island Group, including Pag-asa,” Hontiveros declared, reinforcing her commitment to Philippine sovereignty in the region.
