Health Update: King Harald of Norway Hospitalised on Holiday in Tenerife

Norway’s King Harald, aged 89, was hospitalised on 24 February 2024 while enjoying a private holiday in Tenerife, Spain. The king was admitted due to an infection and dehydration, but reports indicate he is in stable condition.

Medical Attention and Prognosis

According to the royal palace, King Harald’s personal physician has been dispatched to assist with local healthcare while ensuring that the king receives the best treatment possible. The palace reassured the public, stating, “When people of almost 90 years old are admitted with an infection, it is serious,” highlighting the need for close monitoring of his health.

Recent Health Challenges

  • The king was previously hospitalised in early 2024 during a trip to Malaysia for a similar infection, which required the implantation of a pacemaker.
  • His medical history includes recent concerns that have prompted him to reduce his official engagements, although he firmly ruled out abdication, asserting his commitment to his role as king.

Royal Family Challenges

The health concerns for King Harald come amidst a particularly scrutinised period for the Norwegian royal family. Crown Princess Mette-Marit, married to Crown Prince Haakon, is dealing with her own health problems and is under public scrutiny due to her past associations. This, coupled with familial legal challenges faced by her son Marius Hoiby, has led to a dip in public support for the monarchy, reportedly down to 60% in February from 70% the prior month.

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre expressed his well-wishes for the king’s recovery during a visit to Ukraine, stressing the national importance of the health of Norway’s ceremonial head.
