South Korean President Lee Jae Myung Plans State Visit to Singapore and the Philippines

SEOUL – South Korean President Lee Jae Myung is set to embark on state visits to Singapore and the Philippines from 1 to 4 March 2024. His agenda includes discussions on cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI) and nuclear energy, aiming to strengthen economic ties between these nations.

Strengthening Ties with Singapore

During his stay in Singapore from 1 to 3 March, Lee will hold a summit with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. The two leaders are expected to discuss:

  • Expansion of investment and trade relations
  • Innovative technologies in AI
  • Developments in nuclear energy

Lee’s office emphasised the significant potential for growth within these sectors, reflecting a strong bilateral relationship.

Meeting with the Philippines’ Leadership

After Singapore, Lee heads to the Philippines for a meeting with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on 3 and 4 March. This summit will also focus on:

  • Defence industry cooperation
  • Infrastructure projects
  • Nuclear energy initiatives
  • Critical mineral resources

Both visits are timely, with the backdrop of the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region, especially concerning North Korea’s military activities.

The Regional Climate

As Lee engages with Singapore and the Philippines, South Korea continues to navigate complex relationships in the region. Recently, the U.S. and South Korean militaries announced annual spring exercises, Freedom Shield, scheduled for 9 to 19 March 2024, amidst rising tensions with North Korea. These drills are defensive, with South Korea aiming to enhance its military readiness against possible threats.

With various international dynamics at play, Lee’s state visits will be closely watched as they may signal shifts in alliances and cooperation strategies in Southeast Asia.
