Prime Minister Lawrence Wong Emphasises AI’s Role at Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong believes in the transformative power of artificial intelligence (AI) and is committed to supporting fellow Commonwealth states in leveraging technology for development. Speaking at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Apia, Samoa, on 25 October 2024, Wong highlighted the potential of digital technology to build resilient societies amidst global challenges.

AI for Resilience and Development

Wong stated, “We look forward to working with our Commonwealth aiga (Samoan for family), especially fellow small states, to use technologies for the good of our people, our economies, and the world.” He emphasised the need for collaboration in the face of conflict and political tensions impacting global stability.

Addressing Key Global Issues

  • Climate change and geopolitical rivalries were cited as pressing issues.
  • Wong underscored the importance of collective resilience as a Commonwealth family.

In his speech, Wong pointed out that Singapore has been effectively utilising AI for public welfare. Initiatives include:

  • Predicting and managing extreme rainfall.
  • Optimising growth and yield in fish farms.
  • Detecting and diagnosing diseases efficiently.

Commitment to Digital Inclusion

Singapore’s ongoing investments aim to enhance AI capabilities among students and small and medium-sized enterprises. Additionally, Wong noted the Digital Inclusion Playbook 2.0, launched in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme to address the digital divide.

A Global Approach to AI Governance

At the conference, Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan echoed Wong’s sentiments, stressing the pivotal role of AI in various sectors, especially healthcare and finance. He further explained Singapore’s intention to share its governance frameworks concerning AI safety and capacity-building opportunities for Commonwealth countries, particularly smaller states.

Bilateral Meetings and Collaboration

During the summit, Wong also engaged in bilateral discussions with several leaders, fostering closer ties and collaboration. Notable meetings included discussions with:

  • Guyana’s President Mohamed Irfaan Ali.
