Mourning Kroshik: Russia’s Rescue Cat Lost to Cancer

An overweight cat named Kroshik, who became a social media sensation, has sadly passed away at the age of four. Known as Crumbs in English, this chonky feline tipped the scales at 17 kg, attracting attention and affection from animal lovers around the globe.

Kroshik’s Journey from Obesity to Rehabilitation

Rescued from a hospital basement in Perm, Russia, Kroshik was found weak and unable to walk, having been fed an unhealthy diet of biscuits and soup. The kind-hearted rescuers at Matroskin Shelter took him in and immediately put him on a strict diet and exercise plan.

  • Kroshik successfully lost 3 kg during his time at the shelter.
  • He was given an underwater treadmill regimen to encourage movement.
  • His efforts even allowed him to jump onto low couches—an impressive feat!

A Sudden Decline

Despite his improvements, tragedy struck on 26 October 2024. Kroshik experienced breathing difficulties and was placed in an oxygen chamber. Unfortunately, he passed away just two hours later.

According to the shelter, the official cause of death is pending, but veterinarians found cancerous tumours on his lungs and spleen, indicating a severe and unexpected decline in health.

A Symbol of Hope

Galiana More, the shelter’s owner, expressed deep sorrow over Kroshik’s death, stating, “It hurts that we didn’t know about it before, couldn’t help.” His story resonated with many, making him a symbol of hope for those facing their own struggles.

The shelter concluded their tribute with heartfelt words: “This is a great loss for us, because Kroshik was a symbol of hope for everyone.” As we bid farewell to this beloved cat, his legacy will live on in the hearts of those who followed his remarkable journey.
