LTA Simplifies ERP 2.0 OBU Installation for Motorists in Singapore

Motorists in Singapore can now enjoy a more streamlined experience when it comes to installing their Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) 2.0 On-Board Units (OBUs). The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has announced that vehicle owners can book installations directly with authorised workshops, making the process much more convenient.

New Installation Process

As of 29 October 2024, vehicle owners no longer need to wait for a notification from LTA to replace their current in-vehicle units. Instead, they can select from a list of identified workshops, contact them directly via phone or WhatsApp, and book an appointment to get the job done. Installation typically takes two to four hours, depending on the vehicle.

Convenience at Your Fingertips

  • No need for any documents when bringing the vehicle for installation.
  • The installation can be combined with other services, such as routine vehicle servicing.
  • A newly redesigned page on the LTA website allows for easy location of workshops based on postal codes or specific names.

Installation Statistics

Since starting the installation in November 2023, around 150,000 vehicles have been fitted with the OBU—this accounts for approximately 15 per cent of all vehicles in Singapore. Interestingly, nearly 90,000 owners have opted to proactively contact workshop providers without waiting for official reminders.

OBU Features

The new OBU system is designed to enhance efficiency and user experience:

  • It consists of three parts: a processing unit, an antenna, and an optional touchscreen display.
  • Motorists can easily deactivate their CEPAS card for complimentary parking and will receive alerts for road closures and available car parks.

Early adopters have reported various placements for the processing unit, with 70 per cent choosing the front passenger footwell, while others opted for alternative placements such as under the driver seat or on the centre console.

Future Developments

From 1 May 2024, new vehicles will be mandated to come with the OBU, with remaining vehicle owners being gradually notified throughout the year. Additional features are set to be introduced, including the ability to pay missed ERP charges more seamlessly.

Feedback from motorists continues to play a crucial role in enhancing the OBU experience. LTA encourages vehicle owners to share their thoughts and suggestions as they adapt to this new technology.
