Yoon Suk Yeol and Donald Trump Discuss Strengthening US-South Korea Ties

SEOUL — In a significant development for international relations, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol held a telephone conversation with US President-elect Donald Trump on 7 November 2024. They discussed strengthening their countries’ partnerships across various domains, primarily focusing on security and economic cooperation.

Security Concerns With North Korea

During the 12-minute call, both leaders voiced their shared concerns regarding North Korea’s military movements, particularly its troop deployment supporting Russia in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. They also highlighted the North’s persistent provocations, including ballistic missile launches.

Plans for Future Meetings

Yoon and Trump agreed on the necessity of an in-person meeting to address pressing issues more effectively. Plans to set a date and location for this meeting are currently underway, according to Mr Kim Tae-hyo, Yoon’s deputy national security adviser.

Economic Ties and Cooperation

  • Trump acknowledged South Korea’s significant achievements in shipbuilding and vessel maintenance.
  • He expressed eagerness to explore how South Korea could support the US shipbuilding industry.
  • Yoon congratulated Trump on his presidential victory and noted that the cooperation among South Korea, Japan, and the US had benefited from Trump‘s previous administration.

As South Korea hosts approximately 28,500 American troops to deter North Korean threats, maintaining a robust alliance remains pivotal for regional security. The incoming US administration’s commitment to a ‘perfect’ partnership reflects continued prioritization of this alliance in light of geopolitical tensions.
