A construction worker has received a 10-year prison sentence for his violent assault in a Geylang massage parlour, reflecting the serious nature of sexual crimes in Singapore. Prodhan Sajib, a 27-year-old Bangladeshi national, committed the heinous act on the morning of 18 May 2022, when a lack of cash triggered a horrifying chain of events.
The Incident
On the day of the incident, Sajib had just finished his morning shift at a construction site in Geylang before he decided to visit the massage parlour. The victim, a 32-year-old Chinese national, was resting inside when she heard the doorbell ring. Upon opening the door, she saw Sajib, who asked for a massage.
- Cost Quarrel: After the victim quoted him a price, Sajib revealed he didn’t have enough money, presenting a bank card but refusing to let her swipe it.
- Lockdown: When asked to leave, Sajib locked the door, escalating the situation into a violent assault.
Details of the Assault
Despite the victim’s attempts to resist, Sajib used physical force, straddling her and choking her as he sought to impose his will. He made aggressive gestures that indicated he would kill her if she did not comply, which left her fearing for her life.
Actions Taken by the Victim
- She tried to escape but was caught and dragged back inside.
- After enduring the assault, she managed to break free once again and call for help from outside the parlour.
Legal Proceedings
Sajib was arrested the day after the attack, thanks to the police who reviewed surveillance footage. He faced multiple charges and ultimately pleaded guilty to one count of rape, while two additional charges were considered in his sentencing.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Maximilian Chew highlighted the excessive violence used during the crime, with the victim suffering physical injuries, including bruises and scratches.
During remand, Sajib revealed he had been taking sex-enhancing medication, claiming it contributed to his violent urges. The prosecution sought a maximum sentence, calling for a serious acknowledgment of the crime’s severity.
In 2020, Singapore expanded its definition of rape to cover various forms of penetration, highlighting the urgent need for legal protection against sexual violence. The court’s decision to impose a significant sentence serves as a strong message regarding the serious consequences of such actions.
