Ng Chee Meng to Contest New Jalan Kayu SMC for PAP in May 2024 Election

The People’s Action Party (PAP) recently announced that Ng Chee Meng will be contesting the new Jalan Kayu Single Member Constituency (SMC) in the upcoming 2024 General Election, set for 3 May. This marks Ng’s third election attempt and his first shot at a single-seat ward, having previously led a team in Sengkang GRC.

Ng Chee Meng’s Background and Political Journey

Ng, who is currently the Secretary-General of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), previously served as a Cabinet minister. Before his political career began in 2015, he was the Chief of Defence Force in the Singapore Armed Forces. His passion for public service is clear: “I want to serve… because I never stopped caring,” he stated at the press conference.

Engaging with the Community

Over the past few weeks, Ng has made a concerted effort to connect with residents in Jalan Kayu and nearby Fernvale. His community walkabouts and interactions in local coffee shops have provided him valuable insights into the concerns and aspirations of voters.

  • Parents worry about their children’s future.
  • Concerns about aging parents.
  • Aspirations for an improved quality of life.

These conversations have inspired Ng’s commitment to building a “kinder, stronger, and more inclusive” Jalan Kayu.

Competitive Landscape

Ng’s candidacy is not without competition. Red Dot United has announced it will be fielding a candidate for the seat, and Ms Kala Manickam, who was a former candidate for the Progress Singapore Party, is leading efforts in the area. Additionally, while the People’s Alliance for Reform initially expressed interest in contesting, they have since withdrawn.

Support from Senior Minister

At the launch event, Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong praised Ng’s resilience and commitment, noting how he led NTUC’s initiatives during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Chee Meng has shown his mettle and will serve Jalan Kayu residents with equal commitment and dedication,” he affirmed.

As voters gear up for the election, the residents of Jalan Kayu and surrounding areas seem eager to see how this political race unfolds.
