Farewell to Politics: Mohamad Maliki Osman Announces Retirement from Public Office

SINGAPORE: This week marked a significant shift in Singapore’s political landscape as Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Mohamad Maliki Osman, announced his retirement, alongside Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen. Both ministers have decided to step down, paving the way for a new leadership team in the upcoming General Election.

Maliki’s Journey

Dr Maliki’s political career has spanned over two decades, beginning in 2001. Throughout this time, he has served five terms as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Sembawang and East Coast GRC, as well as a stint as mayor of Southeast Community Development Council (CDC). In a heartfelt Facebook post, he expressed gratitude to the residents he served, saying, “Serving residents in Sembawang GRC, East Coast GRC, and as mayor has been a deeply enriching and humbling journey.”

He reflected on the importance of community, thanking grassroots leaders and volunteers for their unwavering commitment to initiatives that positively impacted many lives.

Prime Minister Wong’s Tributes

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong publicly acknowledged both ministers’ contributions on social media. He described Dr Ng as a steady and clear-minded leader, particularly during crises, asserting that Dr Maliki has been instrumental in uniting communities and strengthening Singapore’s international relations.

  • Dr Maliki: Worked in various ministries, including Foreign Affairs, Defence, Education, and National Development.
  • Dr Ng: Known for modernising the Singapore Armed Forces and enhancing job security for workers.

Looking Ahead

The transition signifies not only a farewell for Dr Maliki but also a chance for the People’s Action Party (PAP) to renew its leadership with new faces like Mdm Hazlina Abdul Halim, who will take over in East Coast GRC. As both ministers step down, they leave a legacy that underscores the importance of community service and leadership in navigating Singapore’s future.

In the words of Dr Maliki, “Thank you, dear residents, for welcoming me into your homes… I will always treasure our shared memories.” His retirement marks the end of an era, but also the beginning of new opportunities for both him and those who will continue their work in the communities they served.
