Rising Emergency Wait Times at Singapore Hospitals Amid Increased Patient Volume

Singapore’s public hospitals are currently facing longer-than-usual waiting times at their emergency departments due to a surge in patient numbers. This increase follows the long weekend, specifically after Vesak Day on 13 May 2024.

Hospitals Request Non-Urgent Cases to Seek Alternatives

Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), Changi General Hospital (CGH), and Sengkang General Hospital (SKH) have all issued advisories urging patients with non-urgent conditions to visit general practitioner (GP) clinics. TTSH stated, “If you require admission, the wait may take a few hours,” while SKH emphasised a triage system to prioritise care based on severity.

Patient Volume Trends

  • Almost 14,200 COVID-19 cases reported in the week of 27 April to 3 May 2024.
  • Increased attendance at emergency departments is common post-public holidays.
  • Recent surge not attributed to COVID-19, according to hospital reports.

According to the Ministry of Health (MOH), acute hospitals typically experience higher attendances during certain periods. They are reminding the public to consider alternatives for non-critical conditions, ensuring that medical professionals can focus on urgent emergencies.

Strategies to Manage Patient Flow

To cope with the increased patient load, hospitals will:

  • Triage patients promptly to ensure those with severe conditions are attended to first.
  • Utilise Mobile Inpatient Care at Home (MIC@Home) for suitable patients.
  • Transfer stable patients to community facilities when necessary.

In light of these developments, the MOH has reassured the public that hospitals are well-equipped to manage the situation efficiently without compromising patient care.
