In a heart-wrenching incident, 21-year-old Ms Lee Zi Rou tragically lost her life when her car was crushed by a falling cargo container in Bukit Mertajam. This accident has left family and friends in mourning as they reflect on the joy she brought into their lives.
The Circumstances of the Accident
The dreadful event occurred at the Jalan Bukit Tengah traffic light junction on 13 November 2024. Ms Lee called her mother, Lim Sheau Ling, just minutes before her death, crying out in pain. Despite her mother’s frantic attempts to locate her, it was too late. “She called at 9.24am, and by 9.30am, she was gone,” shared Lim, her voice heavy with grief.
Community Mourning
Hundreds gathered at Ms Lee’s family home for her funeral on 17 November, showing immense support and love. Her colleagues and classmates described her as a cheerful and warm individual whose spirit lit up any room she entered. The services, conducted according to Buddhist customs, were a poignant reminder of her vibrant life.

Legal Action Ahead
Lim, a single mother to four daughters, has expressed her intent to seek justice for her family. She is pursuing legal action against the lorry driver responsible for the accident, who reportedly lost control of his vehicle while making a left turn, causing the cargo container to topple over onto Ms Lee’s car. The driver is currently under investigation for causing death by reckless driving—a serious charge that carries a potential sentence of up to ten years.
