Heavy Rain Causes Flood Warnings Across Singapore: PUB Reports

SINGAPORE: Heavy rain over the weekend has led to multiple flash flood warnings across several locations in Singapore, as the north-east monsoon brings persistent downpours.

Severe Weather Alerts

On Saturday, 16 November 2024, the national water agency, PUB, issued an advisory around 3pm, warning of heavy rainfall expected in the northern, eastern, and western regions. By the next day, heavy rain had triggered a flash flood at Ophir Road near Bugis.

Record Rainfall

  • Daily rainfall on Saturday reached a significant 108.4mm in the northwestern part of Singapore.
  • This figure represents about 43% of Singapore’s average monthly rainfall for November.
  • The rainfall recorded lies within the top 3% of maximum daily rainfall since 1978.

As of Sunday, 17 November 2024, an update from PUB around 1.30pm urged the public to avoid affected areas due to ongoing heavy rain across the northern, southern, and western parts of the island.

Continued Monsoon Effects

According to the Meteorological Service Singapore, moderate to heavy thundery showers are expected to continue until the end of November. Forecasts indicate that rainfall during this period will be above average.

On particularly rainy days, residents can expect daily temperature lows of around 23 degrees Celsius. With these weather patterns, it’s wise for Singaporeans to stay updated with safety advisories from PUB and be cautious, especially in flood-prone areas.
