RSAF Showcases Cutting-Edge Drones at Exercise Forging Sabre 2024

At the recent Exercise Forging Sabre in Idaho, the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) demonstrated its prowess with micro unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as new technologies take to the skies. The exercise, running from 6 September to 21 September 2024, involves over 800 troops and showcases the RSAF’s innovative approach to modern warfare.

Micro Drones in Action

The RSAF’s newly established Drone Rapid Operationalisation, Integration and Deployment (DROID) unit is actively participating in this high-stakes training, utilizing three advanced drone types: the Neros Archer, Skydio X10, and the Ascent Spirit. These drones are equipped with capabilities that enhance operational efficiency:

  • Neros Archer: An anti-jamming drone that excels in GPS-denied environments, making it resilient against electronic threats.
  • Skydio X10: This drone features obstacle avoidance and autonomously navigates challenging terrains, allowing operators to focus on critical battlefield intelligence.
  • Ascent Spirit: Modified with advanced algorithms, it can perform autonomous swarming—coordinating multiple drones to collaboratively identify targets.

Innovations and Techniques

Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Tay Cheng Chuan, the unit’s commanding officer, highlighted the importance of integrating these micro drones into operational plans. “By harnessing their strengths, we increase mission success and resilience against changing environments,” he noted. This modern approach is a step forward from traditional platforms, reflecting lessons learned from recent global conflicts.

Increased Drone Scale

The number of drones used in this iteration of Exercise Forging Sabre has significantly increased—from eleven in 2023 to twenty-four in 2024. This includes a variety of commercial off-the-shelf models, reflecting a strategic shift to leverage readily available technologies for military operations.

Learning by Doing

The hands-on experience with these drones has proven to be effective, even for novice operators. As one participant described, controlling the Skydio X10 felt reminiscent of a gaming experience, making drone operation more accessible. This approach not only trains personnel but also enhances their confidence in operating cutting-edge tech in dynamic environments.

Overall, Exercise Forging Sabre exemplifies the RSAF’s commitment to evolving its capabilities through technology and innovation, ensuring that Singapore remains prepared for future challenges.
