Two Teenagers Arrested After Ang Mo Kio Fire Sends Eleven to Hospital

A startling incident in Ang Mo Kio has resulted in the arrest of two teenage boys and the evacuation of dozens following a fire that broke out on the evening of 25 September 2024. The blaze, which began around 8.25 PM at Block 510 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8, has raised concerns regarding safety and community response.

Response and Impact

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) reported that the fire involved a personal mobility aid and several bicycles located at the lift lobby on the seventh floor. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames, ensuring the safety of the residents.

  • Eleven individuals, aged between 18 months and 85 years, required hospital treatment for smoke inhalation.
  • Approximately 90 residents were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Community Managed the Crisis

Member of Parliament for Ang Mo Kio GRC, Nadia Ahmad Samdin, was attending a Meet-The-People session nearby when she learned of the fire. She expressed her gratitude for the swift action taken by emergency services and the local community.

“SCDF and SPF were on the scene — officers quickly extinguished the fire, tended to residents, and conducted investigations,” she noted in her statement. Nadia highlighted the support from neighbours who quickly joined efforts to help residents; some assisted with wheelchairs while others provided water and snacks.

Next Steps and Investigation

As the investigation into the cause of the fire continues, authorities confirmed that the two teenagers, aged 16 and 17, have been arrested for mischief by fire. Thankfully, there were no fatalities or damage to apartments, although residents may require ongoing support.

“The Ang Mo Kio Town Council team has been proactive in inspecting units for debris and arranging cleaning as necessary,” Nadia added. The electrical team has also worked diligently to restore power to affected areas.

Residents were able to return to their homes before midnight, but the community remains vigilant as further investigations unfold.
