Amid the global buzz surrounding artificial intelligence (AI), Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong emphasized the need for governments to remain realistic about its implications on jobs and livelihoods during a session at the G-20 summit in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Taming the AI Hype
Speaking on 23 November 2024, PM Wong acknowledged the “tremendous potential” of AI to enhance lives. However, he urged fellow leaders to keep a clear perspective, pointing out that while excitement is palpable, there are genuine challenges ahead.
- Massive investments are pouring into infrastructure like data centres.
- Singapore is integrating AI to streamline public sector processes.
- Businesses can leverage AI for efficiency, from smaller firms to major corporations.
Supporting Businesses and Workers
According to PM Wong, AI presents varied opportunities for businesses. Smaller enterprises can harness accessible AI-powered tools, while larger firms might consider developing in-house AI models to redefine workflows.
Singapore is also rolling out regulatory sandboxes and test beds, allowing companies to innovate safely and bring new AI solutions to market efficiently. This approach aims to foster a vibrant ecosystem for both local startups and established enterprises.
Addressing Employment Concerns
Recognizing the transformation AI brings, PM Wong highlighted the importance of addressing workers’ concerns about job security. Singapore collaborates with employers and unions to reskill and upskill affected workers, promoting smoother transitions into new, better-paying roles.
He cited the automation of crane operations at Singapore’s ports as a successful example, where operators can now control machines remotely from comfortable environments instead of facing harsh conditions. This shift results in higher productivity and improved pay.
Global Cooperation for a Fair Future
PM Wong commended leaders from India, Brazil, and South Africa for their efforts at the G-20 in promoting fair work through AI. He believes that the G-20 can significantly contribute to turning AI into an engine for global growth.
In his message, he assured that Singapore is eager to work with other nations to secure a fair and just future for all, navigating the balance between innovation and social responsibility.
After the two-day summit, PM Wong will continue his Africa trip with an official visit to Ethiopia, further strengthening bilateral ties.
