ASEAN Calls for Peace: Anwar Ibrahim Highlights Dialogue Between Thailand and Cambodia

KUALA LUMPUR — A crucial meeting of Southeast Asian foreign ministers is set to take place in Malaysia this Monday (22 December 2024) amid escalating tensions between Thailand and Cambodia. The clashes along their shared border have resulted in the tragic loss of at least 40 lives and displaced over half a million people this month alone.

A Call for Dialogue

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has emphasised the need for both nations to uphold “the spirit of dialogue, wisdom and mutual respect” to restore stability in the region. He has been in direct communication with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, urging them to negotiate their differences peacefully.

Meeting Details

  • Date: 22 December 2024
  • Location: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
  • Current ASEAN Chair: Malaysia

Chaired by Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan, the meeting provides both sides an opportunity to engage in open negotiations. Anwar expressed cautious optimism regarding reaching a constructive outcome that secures peace and stability for the affected populations.

Human Impact of the Conflict

The humanitarian cost is staggering, with the Cambodian side reporting over 518,611 individuals displaced due to artillery exchanges and airstrikes from Thailand. Roughly 400,000 individuals in Thailand have also been forced from their homes. These figures reveal the extensive toll the conflict is taking on civilian life.

“At present, more than half a million Cambodian people, including women and children, are suffering severe hardships due to forced displacement from their homes and schools,” stated Cambodia’s Interior Ministry.

Regional Responses

In addition to ASEAN’s efforts, diplomatic interventions from the United States and China have been noted, although with limited success thus far. Both nations have been reciprocally accusing each other of instigating the renewed fighting, which has its roots in territorial disputes dating back to colonial times.

Looking Forward

The meeting marks a pivotal moment for ASEAN as they work towards finding a lasting solution to the tensions. The foreign ministers will consider both observations and findings from an ASEAN team, supported by satellite-monitoring technology from the US.

Let’s hope dialogue prevails in the spirit of peace!
