Escalating Violence in Aleppo: Kurdish Fighters and Syrian Forces Clash, Civilians Displaced

Violence continues to erupt in Aleppo as Syrian security forces engage in fierce clashes with Kurdish fighters, forcing thousands to flee their homes. Just days into the fighting, both sides find themselves entrenched in a complex political landscape that has seen ongoing tensions since the ousting of Bashar al-Assad.

Background of the Conflict

The violence began on Tuesday (7 January 2024) in predominantly Kurdish neighbourhoods such as Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyeh, resulting in at least 22 deaths, according to reports. While the Syrian government accused Kurdish fighters of using civilian infrastructure as shields, Kurdish authorities claimed government forces targeted hospitals, putting lives at risk.

  • Total fatalities: 22 people confirmed dead
  • Civilians displaced: Over 140,000 due to the conflict
  • Fatalities among civilians: Estimated at 12 from Kurdish areas and about 10 from government regions

Ceasefire Efforts

In an attempt to de-escalate tensions, the Syrian Ministry of Defence announced a ceasefire on Friday (9 January 2024). However, this has been met with resistance, as Kurdish units rejected the call to withdraw from the areas they occupy.

As stated by the Defence Ministry, the ceasefire took effect early on Friday to prevent further violence in residential areas. Yet, Kurdish leaders declared their intentions to remain and defend their neighborhoods against what they termed as an unwarranted assault.

The Humanitarian Crisis

The ongoing strife has created a humanitarian crisis, with thousands of families fleeing their homes. As Rana Issa, a resident of Ashrafiyeh recounted, “Many people want to leave, but are afraid of the snipers.”

Humanitarian corridors were set up for civilians aiming to escape — but the fear and chaos have made the situation increasingly dire.

International Reactions

The conflict has drawn international attention, with US Special Envoy Tom Barrack expressing hope for a lasting peace. In contrast, Kurdish leaders have called for urgent intervention from the international community to halt the violence and civilian casualties.

As we observe the developments in Aleppo, the conflict’s implications could ripple throughout the region, potentially dragging in larger powers and exacerbating an already fragile situation.
