SINGAPORE — The tragic drowning of prominent Indian singer-songwriter Zubeen Garg has raised questions about safety procedures and the influence of alcohol on the day of his death. A coroner’s inquiry revealed that Garg, aged 53, was severely intoxicated when he drowned while swimming off Lazarus Island on 19 September 2025, just a day before he was scheduled to perform at the North East India Festival in Singapore.

During the proceedings at the coroner’s court, which commenced on 14 January 2024, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) David Lim provided a detailed account of the events leading to Garg’s drowning. On the day of the incident, Garg had jumped into the water after initially wearing a life jacket, but he removed it, complaining it was too large.
Dramatic Turn of Events
- Witnesses reported Garg was drinking alcohol on the yacht, with a blood alcohol concentration of 333 milligrams per 100ml — well above Singapore’s legal driving limit of 80 milligrams.
- After swimming briefly and returning to the yacht, Garg opted to swim again but declined to wear a smaller life jacket, despite repeated suggestions from those present.
- Eyewitnesses indicated that within moments, he became motionless and floated face down in the water. Immediate resuscitation efforts were made, but he was pronounced dead later that evening.
Family’s Concerns and Future Hearings
Mr Garg’s uncle expressed deep concerns about the circumstances surrounding his death, questioning the sequence of events and whether medical assistance was timely.
