US Vice President Kamala Harris has cancelled her upcoming trip to Singapore, Bahrain, and Germany due to the rampant wildfires currently devastating California. This decision follows President Joe Biden’s cancellation of his visit to Italy, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
Impact of California Wildfires
The wildfires in Los Angeles have escalated to unprecedented levels, resulting in five fatalities and forcing around 180,000 residents to evacuate. Approximately 12,500 hectares have been consumed by the fires, prompting Biden to declare a major disaster in California.
Harris’s Planned Trip Details
Initially scheduled from 13 to 17 January 2024, Harris was set to visit key locations, including:
- Changi Naval Base in Singapore on 15 January
- Naval Support Activity–Bahrain in Manama on 16 January
- Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany on 17 January
During this trip, the Vice President intended to meet with regional leaders and discuss significant US achievements under the Biden-Harris administration, emphasising the partnerships formed with each nation.
As her term nears its end on 20 January, this cancellation could be regarded as a significant shift in her planned final diplomatic engagements.
What’s Next?
The administration’s immediate focus will be on managing the California wildfires and coordinating support for affected residents. As the situation develops, the Vice President’s office will likely provide updates on future travel plans.
