Kranji Warehouse Fire: SCDF Battles Flames for Four Days

A fire at a warehouse in Kranji has been brought under control after intense firefighting efforts that lasted four days, according to the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). The blaze, which reportedly began on 19 February 2024 at Wah & Hua, a recycling company, reignited the concerns surrounding fire safety in such facilities.

Firefighting Efforts and Response

Firefighters worked tirelessly, deploying six water jets, four unmanned firefighting machines, and even an aerial vehicle to tackle the deep-seated flames among the waste materials. Although the fire was largely extinguished by Wednesday night, SCDF continued to monitor the site due to lingering hotspots.

Health and Safety Measures

  • One individual suffered from smoke inhalation and burn injuries and was taken to the hospital.
  • Nearby workers were evacuated as a precaution when heavy smoke was reported, visible from areas like Bukit Panjang to Jurong East.

Historical Context

This incident marks the fourth fire at the same facility in seven years, with previous fires occurring in March 2018, June 2023, and March 2024. According to SCDF, these earlier fires were caused by either smouldering embers or unexpected ignitions. The agency has documented various fire safety non-compliances at the location, issuing multiple notices relating to unsafe practices.

Further Investigations Underway

The National Environment Agency (NEA) has announced that it is investigating the cause of the fire and exploring possible updates to waste management safety guidelines based on findings. They emphasised that any future actions will depend on the investigation’s outcomes. The premises owner has been directed to appoint a professional engineer to evaluate the site and suggest necessary safety improvements.

As a local community grapples with the implications of repeated incidents like this, safety measures will surely come under scrutiny, prompting discussions about better regulations in waste management practices.
