The political office of Hamas in Doha is not closing down anytime soon, according to a statement from Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al-Ansari. This declaration comes amid reports and speculation about the group’s potential relocation to Turkey and questions surrounding its mediatory function in the ongoing Gaza conflict.
Clarification from Qatar
Al-Ansari clarified that the office was established to facilitate mediation efforts aimed at ending the violence in Gaza. He mentioned, “Obviously, when there is no mediation process, the office itself doesn’t have any function other than being part of the process.” The spokesperson reassured that any decision regarding the permanent closure of the office would be communicated through official channels and not media speculation.
US and International Involvement
There have been indications from the United States asking Qatar to expel Hamas, as reported earlier this month. However, the Qatari official stated that such claims do not reflect the current circumstances.
- Negotiations involving Qatar, the US, and Egypt have been ongoing but have produced little progress.
- The political bureau members of Hamas often travel between various capitals as part of their negotiations.
Turkey’s Position on Hamas
Turkish officials have firmly denied any claims that Hamas has shifted its political operations to Turkey, explaining that while some members visit occasionally, the primary office remains in Doha. Turkey, which has been vocally critical of Israel’s actions, has a different stance towards Hamas, not categorising the group as a terrorist organisation.
As the situation develops, Qatar has signalled a pause in its mediation efforts until Hamas and Israel exhibit a genuine willingness to engage in dialogue.
