Singapore Red Cross Donates S$1.2 Million for Humanitarian Aid in Gaza and Egypt

The Singapore Red Cross (SRC) has recently announced a generous aid package of S$1.2 million for humanitarian relief operations in Gaza and for Palestinian evacuees in Egypt. This initiative reflects Singapore’s commitment to supporting vulnerable communities grappling with the consequences of conflict.

Adequate Support for Evacuees

The latest aid consists of a previously pledged S$440,000 worth of tents and a new commitment of S$758,000 intended for essential medical supplies and educational services. This funding aims to benefit approximately 4,000 evacuees and their families, ensuring access to necessary healthcare and education.

Support for Children’s Education

  • Funding will assist in providing medical consumables and equipment.
  • A mobile education unit is being retrofitted to serve around 2,000 Palestinian children situated in Egypt’s accommodation centres.

Presidential Support

The donation handover was witnessed by President Tharman Shanmugaratnam during his state visit to Cairo from 19 to 22 September 2024. In a heartfelt message, he underscored the importance of humanitarian support, stating that Egypt is a vital partner in these efforts. He reaffirmed Singapore’s calls for an immediate ceasefire while supporting the Palestinian right to statehood.

Previous Contributions

To date, SRC has contributed S$1.9 million in aid to Gaza via the Egyptian Red Crescent, encompassing a range of essentials including:

  • Medical supplies
  • Hygiene kits
  • Food provisions
  • Water filtration systems

Additionally, SRC has allocated another S$500,000 to other relief operations through various partners, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to humanitarian assistance.

Ongoing Relief Efforts

Benjamin William, Secretary-General and CEO of SRC, noted that over 115,000 civilians from Gaza have sought refuge in Egypt. He emphasized the importance of both education and medical care as fundamental needs that provide dignity and hope for those affected by this crisis. SRC is committed to continuing its support for displaced communities within Gaza.
