SINGAPORE — With drink driving arrests on the rise, Singapore’s Traffic Police (TP) are trialling a new handheld breath evidential analyser (HBEA) to enhance road safety measures. This device kicked off its operational trial on 5 September 2024, aiming to streamline the testing process for suspected drunk drivers.
What’s New About the HBEA?
The HBEA offers accurate readings that can be used as evidence in legal proceedings, unlike the previous handheld breath analyser (HBA) which only provided preliminary results. This innovation is set to reduce the need for a secondary, more cumbersome test at police headquarters.
Results Matter
- The HBEA conforms to International Organisation of Legal Metrology standards.
- Accurate measurements are crucial as alcohol levels can diminish quickly after consumption.
- Both devices maintain the legal alcohol limit of 35mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath.
Real-time Testing
During a recent enforcement operation along Upper Cross Street, members of the media witnessed the device in action. Traffic was slowed as officers conducted checks, and two individuals—one aged 43 and another 48—were arrested after failing their breath tests.
What Happens Next?
Once police suspect a motorist of drink driving, they administer the HBA initially. If positive, the driver proceeds to the HBEA for a final test. Successful implementation could not only provide more precise data but also keep intoxicated drivers off the streets more efficiently.
Public Advisory
Authorities remind motorists:
- Don’t drink and drive.
- Opt for public transport, taxis, or arrange for a designated driver if you plan to consume alcohol.
Superintendent Muhammad Firdaus Abdul Raub highlighted the importance of road safety, noting that traffic enforcement will continue to target irresponsible behaviours. “Driving under the influence is extremely dangerous,” he warned.
