Singapore Secures ICAO Council Seat, Led by Jeffrey Siow

SINGAPORE – Singapore’s influence in global aviation has been reaffirmed with its re-election to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) council during its 42nd assembly session held in Montreal, Canada, on 27 September 2024. A key moment for the republic, the delegation was steered by Acting Minister for Transport and Senior Minister of State for Finance, Jeffrey Siow.

Mr Siow proudly announced that Singapore garnered a record-breaking 176 out of 184 votes, securing the most votes among all elected states. In his Facebook post, he reflected on the significance of this achievement, stating, “In a world where rules matter less and small countries find it harder to exert influence, we have to work harder with like-minded partners to secure our interests.”

Achievements in International Cooperation

Singapore’s journey with ICAO began in 2003 when the nation was first elected to the council at an extraordinary assembly session. This recent re-election marks its continual presence at the council, held every three years, emphasising the nation’s dedication to global aviation standards and practices.

Looking Ahead

  • Collaboration: Singapore is ready to collaborate with all stakeholders, aimed at tackling forthcoming challenges in the aviation sector.
  • Global Leadership: Mr Siow highlighted the importance of international cooperation, noting that the effective operation of organisations like ICAO is crucial for Singapore’s prosperity.

As the aviation landscape evolves, Singapore’s steadfast participation in ICAO exemplifies its commitment to maintaining high standards and promoting safety in civil aviation worldwide.
