Singapore Customs Bust: 14,550 Cartons of Duty-Unpaid Cigarettes Seized, Suspect Arrested

A notable enforcement operation by Singapore Customs has uncovered a significant amount of duty-unpaid cigarettes worth over S$1.5 million. Following two coordinated raids earlier this month, authorities apprehended a 40-year-old Chinese national linked to the illicit haul.

Details of the Operations

The first operation took place on 7 February 2024 in an industrial building at Jalan Buroh. Officers observed the suspect exiting the premises, which led to the discovery of 7,306 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes hidden inside three air cooler units.

A subsequent operation on 11 February 2024 at Tuas Bay Close revealed an additional 7,244 cartons, also concealed in air coolers. In total, the seized cigarettes amounted to approximately S$1,578,512 in evaded duty and Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Legal Ramifications

  • Offenders can face hefty fines—up to 40 times the amount of duty and GST evaded.
  • Prison sentences may extend up to six years for those found guilty.
  • The ongoing court proceedings will further determine the suspect’s fate.
