Edwin Tong Rebuts Pritam Singh’s ‘Court of Public Opinion’ Remarks

In a passionate response, Law Minister Edwin Tong has vehemently rejected Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh’s recent assertion that the “court of public opinion can be a bigger court than any court in the world.” Speaking on 8 November 2024, Tong labelled Singh’s comments as “outrageous” and detrimental to the integrity of the legal system in Singapore.

Singh’s Controversial Remarks

During an interview with CNA’s The Assembly, Singh, reflecting on his handling of former MP Raeesah Khan’s lies, stated, “At the end of the day, the court of public opinion can be a bigger court than any court in the world.” This statement arose when discussing the pressure he faces in politics and how public perception affects political figures.

Tong’s Strong Rebuttal

According to Tong, such assertions undermine public trust in Singapore’s legal system. He emphasised: “The rule of law is a cornerstone of our system. We do not have ‘rule of the mob,’ and suggesting otherwise is a very dangerous idea.” He asserted that courts make decisions based solely on facts and the law, and no one, including politicians, is above it.

Background Context

  • In February 2024, Singh was fined S$14,000 for lying to a parliamentary Select Committee and has since appealed the conviction.
  • Tong highlighted that this trial was extensive, with a detailed judgement spanning nearly 150 pages.
  • Singh attempted to clarify his remarks in a Facebook post, noting that his comments were not intended to belittle the judicial system.

Political Implications

Tong warned against the tendency of populist politicians worldwide who attack judicial decisions when rulings are unfavourable. He remarked, “This kind of irresponsible politics should have no place in Singapore.”

This ongoing discourse reflects the broader issues of public trust and accountability in leadership within Singapore’s political landscape, reminding citizens that integrity within the legal framework must be upheld rigorously.
