The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is gearing up to conduct controlled social experiments designed to assess the public’s vigilance and response to potential terror threats. Set to take place in the heartlands from early to mid-June 2024, these experiments are a significant part of the ongoing SGSecure movement.
What to Expect from the Experiments
Using actors and realistic props, the planned scenarios aim to mimic real-life situations while ensuring minimal disruption to the public. The MHA has emphasised that these scenarios will be executed with careful oversight to guarantee safety. Authorities will be present to safeguard the public throughout these exercises.
Raising Awareness through Educational Content
Footage from the experiments will be compiled into an educational web series aimed at enhancing awareness of key SGSecure advisories:
- Run, Hide, Tell — Guidance on responding to an attack.
- Press, Tie, Tell — First aid skills for helping the injured during an emergency.
The first episode of this web series is set to debut on 30 July 2024, providing viewers with insights into public reactions as well as conclusions drawn from the experiments.
Stay Vigilant and Report
In its announcement, the MHA urged the public to stay alert and promptly report any suspicious activities to the authorities. Since the launch of SGSecure in September 2016, the movement has made notable strides in educating Singaporeans about terrorism’s realities and in enhancing their preparedness to respond effectively.
SGSecure’s Current Phase
The latest phase of SGSecure, launched in July 2023, carries the tagline “What’s Your Role?”, encouraging individuals to play their part in combating terrorism and promoting social cohesion. This initiative aligns with MHA’s goal of mobilising Singaporeans to work together against threats of radicalisation.
