The Bukit Panjang Light Rail Transit (BPLRT) system is almost there! With a remarkable 88 per cent of its renewal programme completed, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) recently confirmed that completion is on track for the end of 2026. This initiative, which kicked off in 2018, aims to enhance service reliability and provide smoother rides for commuters.
Upgrades and Replacements
Among the significant improvements being made are:
- Replacement of light rail vehicles (LRVs)
- Implementation of a new communications-based train control signalling system
- Upgrading the Operations Control Centre (OCC)
In a demonstration of their commitment to quality, the LTA stated that the recent upgrades will allow for better train speed control, ensuring more reliable and enjoyable travel experiences for all.
What’s Being Renewed?
One of the main focuses of the renewal is the power rail system, which has been in action since the BPLRT opened. Comprising five aluminium rods working together, this essential component delivers electricity to the trains. To enhance performance:
- The design of components is being improved
- Modularised parts are being introduced for easier maintenance
Late-Night Operations
On a recent night, reporters observed workers at Bangkit LRT station during a power rail replacement operation. With only a limited timeframe to work—about two-and-a-half hours—they diligently replaced around 45 metres of power rail segments, showcasing their efficiency and dedication.
“Safety is our top priority,” reiterated LTA as they ensured workers were briefed on safety protocols, particularly on humid nights. Any lightning risk would halt operations immediately.
Looking Ahead
The signalling system renewal, which has been fully operational since 8 November 2025, is described by the LTA as a significant undertaking, integrating new technology across existing infrastructure.
The ongoing renovations at the OCC—dubbed the nerve centre of the system—are aimed at enhancing monitoring and coordination as the railway moves towards greater efficiency.
The journey to modernise the BPLRT is indeed a long one. Former Transport Ministers have noted its legacy issues, but with the ongoing renewal efforts, there’s optimism for a more reliable and efficient public transport future.
