SINGAPORE: Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Singapore’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, is set to travel to Kuala Lumpur on 22 December 2024 for a critical ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting focusing on the escalating border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia.
The meeting will be chaired by Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan, as Malaysia currently holds the ASEAN chair. This gathering aims to address the ongoing conflict and explore potential measures for de-escalation and peace.
Context of the Conflict
The renewed hostilities in December 2024 have resulted in tragic casualties—at least 22 lives lost in Thailand and 19 in Cambodia. Reports indicate that over half a million Cambodians have been displaced due to the clashes.
ASEAN’s Role in Promoting Peace
- Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has expressed deep concern over the situation.
- The MFA welcomes the efforts of the ASEAN Chair and other external partners to foster dialogue and ensure stability.
- ASEAN’s participation is crucial for maintaining good relations and promoting solidarity among member states.
In a previous agreement made on 11 December 2024, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the need for Cambodia and Thailand to engage in negotiations to resolve their differences amicably.
A Call for Restraint
Singapore has previously urged both nations to demonstrate restraint and resolve their issues through constructive dialogue rather than further violence. The situation has been exacerbated since a Cambodian soldier was killed in July 2024, marking the beginning of recent hostilities.
As the meeting approaches, the hope remains that diplomatic efforts can bring an end to the conflict and support peace in the region.
