Malaysian Man Arrested for Smuggling S$237,000 Worth of Drugs at Woodlands Checkpoint

A 39-year-old Malaysian man was arrested at Woodlands Checkpoint after attempting to smuggle a significant quantity of drugs, including over 3.2kg of cannabis and 1.7kg of Ice. This incident occurred on 22 December 2024 and was made public by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) on 29 December.

Enhanced Checks Lead to Drug Discovery

According to ICA, the man was selected for enhanced checks based on intelligence gathered by its Integrated Targeting Centre. Officers discovered two black bundles suspected to contain controlled substances hidden in the man’s bag. Upon further investigation by the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB), a total of seven bundles were retrieved.

Estimating the Impact of Seized Drugs

  • The drugs seized have an estimated street value of more than S$237,000.
  • They could potentially sustain the addiction of approximately 1,440 users for a week.

Legal Consequences for Drug Trafficking

Under Section 7 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1973, anyone caught importing or exporting more than 250g of methamphetamine or 500g of cannabis may face severe penalties, including the death penalty. The ICA continues to emphasise its commitment to working with various agencies to prevent drug smuggling and other illegal activities at Singapore’s borders.
