Singapore Police Prepare for 2024 New Year Countdown Crowds

The countdown to the New Year in Singapore is gearing up, with crowds expected to flock to popular spots like Marina Bay and Kallang. The Singapore Police Force (SPF) is proactively managing crowd sizes and ensuring public safety, signalling a very busy evening ahead on 31 December 2024.

Real-Time Crowd Management

To better manage the large crowds anticipated at this year’s celebrations, the SPF will release real-time photos of crowd levels at Marina Bay and Kallang. These updates will be accessible through the Crowd@MarinaBay and Crowd@Kallang websites, starting from 7pm and 8.30pm respectively.

  • Real-time photos to show crowd levels and area closures.
  • Updated photos will help the public navigate the celebrations safely.

Area Closures and Police Presence

The police have begun closing specific areas like Jubilee Bridge, Fullerton Waterfront, and the Merlion Waterfront to ensure safety. Should crowds exceed safe levels, further areas may be shut down for crowd control.

Expect increased police presence and security personnel deployed to manage the event. Security checks will also be in place, so be prepared for bag inspections.

Transport Arrangements

With limited parking at Marina Bay, authorities are urging the public to use public transport. Significant extensions to MRT service hours are planned:

  • Last trains departing between 1.38am and 2.15am on various lines.
  • Alternate MRT stations like Esplanade, Promenade, and Downtown are advised for less crowding.

Roads around the area will also be closed. For example, one carriageway of Sheares Avenue will be closed to vehicles from 11.30pm on 31 December to 12.15am on 1 January. Be mindful of the restrictions in place, especially if you’re planning to drive.

Your Safety is Key

The SPF has reiterated the importance of following their instructions to ensure everyone’s safety. They’ll tackle public nuisances swiftly, with specific warnings against obstructive behaviours, especially in heavy foot traffic areas.

As the clock ticks down to midnight, remember to enjoy the festivities responsibly and stay alert to crowd advisories. Here’s to a safe and enjoyable start to 2024!
