SINGAPORE – In a troubling series of events, two men have been sentenced to significant prison terms following their respective convictions for crimes against women. The cases highlight serious concerns over personal safety and the need for greater awareness regarding consent.
Dhanabalan Fok Jin Jin’s Case
On 24 November 2024, Dhanabalan Fok Jin Jin, a 42-year-old technician, was sentenced to 15 years in prison and 12 strokes of the cane after being found guilty of raping an intoxicated woman in Holland Village. The offence occurred on 30 January 2021 when the victim, after celebrating her birthday, was unable to secure a taxi home. Fok, alongside his friend, exploited her vulnerable state, offering to drive her home.
- Convicted Date: 22 September 2024
- Compensation Ordered: More than $18,500
- Additional Jail Time: Four months if compensation is unpaid
High Court Judge Valerie Thean stated that Fok’s actions were premeditated, highlighting the severe impact on the victim, who now suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.
Koh Lee Hwa’s Case
Meanwhile, on 26 November 2024, Koh Lee Hwa, a 49-year-old renovation contractor, received a sentence of 12 years and three weeks’ jail along with 13 strokes of the cane for raping a client in her home. Koh was called to the victim’s flat to fix lighting issues when he took advantage of the situation and assaulted her.
- Victim’s Identity: Protected by a gag order
- Convicted Charges: Including rape and sexual assault
- Prosecution’s Stand: Sought 14 years in jail
Justice Mavis Chionh remarked on the gravity of Koh’s actions, especially in the sanctity of the victim’s home, which is expected to be a safe space.
Implications of These Sentences
Both cases illuminate the persistent issues surrounding consent and sexual violence in Singapore. They underscore the necessity for society to foster a culture of respect and understanding regarding personal boundaries.
While Fok has indicated his intention to appeal against his sentence, the severity of these rulings sends a message regarding the seriousness with which the courts treat such offences.
As these sentiments resurface and the legal proceedings reflect societal values, it remains crucial for individuals to be aware and speak out against sexual violence.
