Catholic Junior College to Move to Punggol Digital District by 2034

Catholic Junior College (CJC) is set to relocate to a new campus near the Punggol Digital District (PDD) by 2034, as announced by the Ministry of Education (MOE) on 16 January 2024. This move marks a significant shift for Singapore’s third-oldest junior college, which has been situated at its Whitley Road campus since 1975.

Enhancing Educational Opportunities

The relocation, part of the JC Rejuvenation Programme, aims to enrich students’ learning experiences by providing closer ties to tech firms and educational institutions within the 50ha PDD, branded as Singapore’s first smart district. Students will have the chance to explore collaborations in fields like artificial intelligence and cyber security, enhancing their pre-university education.

  • New campus expected to foster collaborations with institutions like the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT).
  • Enhanced learning experiences aligned with real-world applications.
  • Proximity to recreational facilities for outdoor and sports activities.

Community and Connectivity

Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong expressed that this “deliberate” move would foster connections that prepare students for a “world beyond college.” Speaking at the signing ceremony for memoranda of understanding with partners such as SIT and the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore, he highlighted how location is instrumental in the college’s educational objectives.

Bernard Tan, chairman of CJC’s management committee, acknowledged the deep-rooted fondness many have for the current campus but noted the improved accessibility across the island, making the transition feasible. After consulting with stakeholders over two years, the management assessed accessibility factors, confirming that journeys from regions like Jurong to Punggol are manageable—no longer than an hour.

Preserving Heritage During Transition

MOE has committed to ensuring a smooth transition while preserving CJC’s legacy. This includes maintaining distinctive educational traditions, school culture, and exploring the possibility of moving significant architectural features from the Whitley Road campus to the new site.

Principal Woo Soo Min reiterated the college’s vision to expand learning beyond traditional methods, incorporating optional programmes that align with students’ interests, further promoting a versatile educational landscape.

As Punggol continues to evolve as a vibrant neighbourhood for young families, CJC’s move reflects the ongoing development of Singapore, creating a sense of belonging and shared purpose within the community.
