Ceasefire Negotiations Progress as Israel Sends Delegation to Qatar

The ongoing ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas have taken a positive turn, with both sides signalling readiness for the next phase of talks. This comes after a 42-day truce initiated in January 2024.

Delegation to Doha

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu‘s office announced that Israel has accepted an invitation to send a delegation to Doha, Qatar, on 10 March 2024. This meeting aims to advance negotiations, according to official statements.

Positive Developments from Hamas

  • Hamas spokesperson Abdel-Latif Al-Qanoua noted “positive indicators” for the upcoming phase of the ceasefire.
  • The group is engaging with Egyptian mediators, alongside officials from Qatar, to push the negotiations forward.
  • Al-Qanoua emphasised the need for aid to the Gaza Strip and the lifting of the blockade imposed on the region.

Casualties and Continued Violence

Despite the ongoing ceasefire, violence persists. A recent Israeli airstrike resulted in the deaths of two Palestinians in Rafah, an incident described by medical sources. The Israeli military stated that this action targeted a drone and individuals attempting to collect it.

Hostage Situation

The ceasefire agreement stipulates the release of the remaining 59 hostages held by Hamas as part of the second phase. To date, Hamas has released 33 Israeli hostages and five Thais in exchange for around 2,000 Palestinian detainees.

The conflict has had devastating consequences, with more than 48,000 Palestinians reported dead, as per Gaza health authorities. The situation remains dire, raising concerns over humanitarian conditions in the enclave.
