A large cement silo recently caused a significant traffic jam when it slipped off a trailer on Balestier Road, blocking two lanes and leading to lengthy delays. The incident occurred around 9am on 21 March 2024 at the junction of Balestier Road and Kim Keat Road.
Details of the Incident
According to the police, the trailer is believed to have skidded, and miraculously, no injuries were reported. A 31-year-old male driver is currently assisting with investigations. Witnesses noted that the silo had hit a traffic light and was left in a perpendicular position to the trailer.
Traffic Impact
- The obstruction meant only the right-most lane was usable.
- By noon, traffic had backed up all the way to Moulmein Road, causing frustration for many drivers.
- Marshalls were seen directing vehicle flow until a mobile crane arrived just after 12pm to lift the silo back onto the trailer.
By approximately 1pm, the silo was secured back onto the flatbed, restoring normal traffic conditions.
Public Reaction
Comedic responses flooded social media platforms regarding a separate, yet related, incident where a concrete block with window grilles toppled on Tuas South Avenue 9. One social media commenter jested: “Literally, landed property,” highlighting the lighter side of the day’s unusual events.
For those in the area or traveling towards Thomson Road, the impact was palpable but managed efficiently, with no major injuries reported.
