Circle Line Tunnel Strengthening Works Nearing Completion, Says LTA

The Circle Line (CCL) tunnel strengthening project is making significant headway, with nearly 50 per cent of the work completed since it began on 17 January 2024. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has ensured that while this allows for safer tunnels, commuters experience some disruptions due to train services operating on a single platform between a few key stations.

Understanding Tunnel Squatting

At the heart of the project lies the issue of tunnel squatting, which affects tunnels built in soft soil, such as marine clay. This phenomenon occurs when the soft soil above compresses, causing the tunnels to deform. If unaddressed, it could threaten long-term service reliability.

Project Progress

  • Completion of steel plates installation on all 152 inbound tunnel rings.
  • Scheduled service disruptions remain in effect until 19 April 2024.
  • Robotic arm technology has been deployed, significantly reducing the number of workers needed for installation tasks.

Future Works and Commuter Advisory

Following the completion of the inner bound work, the next phase will focus on the outer bound tunnel towards Dhoby Ghaut station. Mr. Saiful Rasno, Director of Infrastructure Enhancement at LTA, reassured that train services will not be affected during this phase and instructed commuters to follow signs for shuttle train information.

With completion aimed for April 2024, the LTA expressed gratitude for the patience shown by commuters during this essential upgrade of the CCL. As they work on enhancing the structural integrity of the tunnels, commuters are urged to stay informed about service changes.
