The Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) has launched a significant operation targeting a syndicate trafficking e-vaporisers infused with etomidate, a substance recently classified as a Class C controlled drug. On Wednesday, 10 September 2024, eight Singaporeans, including seven men and one woman, were arrested in connection with this major bust.
The Operation Unfolds
The operation initiated in different neighbourhoods, namely Hougang Avenue 9, Boon Lay Drive, and Telok Blangah Rise, resulting in the seizure of over 400 vape pods suspected to contain etomidate and more than S$22,500 in cash.
Details of the Arrests
- Officers detained two men aged 26 and 28 at a residential unit near Telok Blangah Rise. Both men resisted arrest but were subdued by the CNB officers.
- 68 vape pods linked to etomidate were recovered from one suspect, while the other was found with five similar pods.
- Subsequent searches at the unit revealed an additional 327 suspected Kpods.
Officers conducted their operations swiftly and professionally, with additional arrests occurring in the vicinity of Hougang and Boon Lay. This included a 23-year-old man found with vape-related products and an 18-year-old woman who intended to collect etomidate e-vaporisers.
Government Response and Wider Implications
This crackdown follows the government’s recent announcement to increase penalties related to vaping, with harsher consequences for first-time offenders taking effect from 1 September 2024. Those caught with etomidate will face severe legal repercussions for trafficking, manufacturing, or possessing this controlled substance.
As Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ng Khai Song stated, “We will continue to monitor and work closely with the relevant agencies to support the Government’s response against etomidate and sending a clear message that such illegal activities will not be tolerated.”
Support and Resources
For those seeking help regarding vaping or substance abuse issues, the Health Promotion Board offers various resources:
- For reporting vaping offences: Health Sciences Authority’s Tobacco Regulation Branch at 6684-2036 / 6684-2037.
- To quit vaping: Contact HPB’s I Quit programme at 1800-438-2000.
With the increasing scrutiny on vaping practices, governmental bodies are keen on ensuring public health safety and enforcing the laws more strictly.
