Defence Ministers Chan Chun Sing and Mohamed Khaled Nordin Strengthen Singapore-Malaysia Relations

In a significant show of solidarity, Singapore’s Minister for Defence Chan Chun Sing recently embarked on a two-day introductory visit to Malaysia. Beginning on 25 August 2024, this visit underscores the longstanding bilateral defence relationship between the two nations.

Key Meetings and Discussions

During his trip, Mr Chan met with his Malaysian counterpart, Mohamed Khaled Nordin. The discussions revolved around:

  • Enhancing people-to-people ties between both defence establishments.
  • Regional security developments.
  • Cooperation in multilateral platforms like the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) and ADMM-Plus.

Mutual Submarine Rescue Support

One of the highlights of the visit was witnessing the signing of the Arrangement for Mutual Submarine Rescue Support and Cooperation between the Republic of Singapore Navy and the Royal Malaysian Navy. This agreement is vital, establishing a framework for mutual support during submarine incidents—something that emphasises the strong connections between both navies.

Keynote Address at PUSPAHANAS

On the second day, Mr Chan will deliver a keynote address at PUSPAHANAS, a centre for defence studies under Malaysia’s Ministry of Defence. This platform will allow him to share insights and foster further defence collaboration.

Additional Engagements

Besides defence discussions, Mr Chan also met Malaysia’s Minister of Housing and Local Government, Nga Kor Ming. They explored ways to enhance civil service exchanges, particularly in urban planning and housing development, including potential study visits and interactions for public officers.

Mr Chan’s visit marks an important chapter in Singapore-Malaysia relations, showcasing their commitment to mutual support and understanding at every level.
