Denmark and Norway Investigate Mysterious Drone Sightings Amid Rising Security Concerns

Recent sightings of unidentified drones near military sites in Denmark and Norway have raised alarms, with Danish officials labelling it a “hybrid attack” potentially linked to Russia’s ongoing military actions in Ukraine.

Danish Response to Drone Sightings

Denmark’s biggest military base, Karup, experienced drone incursions that prompted police and military collaboration to investigate further. Danish police confirmed that one to two drones were observed on the night of 27 September 2024, hovering near the base, which has key military functions including housing helicopters and conducting flight training.

Ban on Civil Drone Flights

  • In response to the drone activities, Denmark has enacted a ban on civil drone flights from 30 September 2024 through 4 October 2024.
  • This ban aims to ensure heightened security during an upcoming European Union summit.
  • Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen emphasized the need for optimal working conditions for armed forces amidst the ongoing security situation.

Norway’s Military Investigations

Norwegian authorities are also investigating sightings near their military base, Orland, where advanced F-35 jets are stationed. The military is collaborating with law enforcement to assess whether the reports are indeed related to drones, with initial observations suggesting multiple unidentified flying objects.

Geopolitical Tensions

This surge in drone activity comes just days after Denmark announced plans to acquire long-range precision weaponry, indicating a proactive stance in the face of perceived threats. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen pointed to Russia as a primary threat to European security, while the Kremlin has denied any involvement, calling the allegations a “staged provocation”.

EU Support for Security Enhancements

A meeting of EU defence ministers earlier this month resulted in discussions about the establishment of a “drone wall” to bolster collective defence mechanisms and learning from lessons in Ukraine.

As tensions heighten in this turbulent climate, Denmark and its Nordic neighbours remain vigilant, striving to navigate the complex dynamics of modern security challenges.
