In a sobering escalation of the ongoing conflict, Russia has launched its largest drone attack on Ukraine to date, causing significant damage in key locations, including military airfields and civilian areas.
Major Targets Under Fire
According to the Ukrainian air force, the drone assault took place overnight on 9 June 2024, with a concentrated effort to hit operational airfields. Major Yuriy Ihnat of the air force reported that one of the main targets was situated in Dubno, approximately 60km from the Polish border, where some hits were recorded.
- 460 out of 479 drones intercepted.
- 19 out of 20 missiles successfully downed.
The constant barrage of drones is said to be a response to Ukraine’s recent drone strikes on Russian air bases, marking a significant uptick in hostilities.
Civilian Areas Hit
On 10 June 2024, the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, suffered further attacks, damaging residential buildings and a maternity ward in Odesa. Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that multiple districts of Kyiv, including the historic Podil neighbourhood, experienced drone strikes, leading to urgent calls for citizens to seek shelter.
- Reported damage to residential buildings.
- Emergency medical facilities compromised, but no casualties reported.
Eyewitnesses noted loud explosions and chaotic scenes as rescuers worked amid the wreckage. While both Ukraine and Russia maintain that they do not target civilians, the persistence of such attacks raises serious concerns about the safety of non-combatants in the conflict.
No End in Sight
As the war continues to escalate, significant diplomatic efforts have yet to yield any meaningful progress. Ukraine is calling for an unconditional ceasefire, but Russia remains staunchly opposed, leaving millions in limbo as the fighting drags on. The degree of devastation and loss on both sides only serves to heighten fears of what lies ahead.
