SINGAPORE: Go-Ahead Singapore is set to take over the operation of 27 bus routes in Tampines starting on 5 July 2026, following the awarding of a S$646 million (US$503 million) contract by the Land Transport Authority (LTA). This move marks a significant change in public transport management for the area, as Go-Ahead replaces SBS Transit in providing these vital services.
Contract Details
The five-year contract, which may be extended by up to five additional years, allows Go-Ahead Singapore to run operations from the new East Coast Integrated Depot. The bus routes include well-frequented services such as 4, 28, and 299, along with managing facilities like Tampines, Tampines Concourse, Tampines North bus interchanges, and the Changi Business Park bus terminal.
Emphasis on Electric Buses
- Go-Ahead’s proposal prioritises large-scale electric bus deployment.
- The LTA focused on quality evaluation, particularly in electric bus operations.
- Developing a satellite training centre in collaboration with the Singapore Bus Academy to enhance local expertise.
LTA noted that Go-Ahead’s methods are based on their success in operating the largest fleet of electric buses in London. Their contract includes innovative approaches such as employing AI-driven tools to improve bus service reliability and reduce bunching.
Commuter Initiatives and Employee Protections
In addition to focusing on electric vehicles, Go-Ahead’s proposal included various commuter-friendly initiatives:
- Establishing “caring corners” at bus interchanges.
- Implementing “baby on board” badges for pregnant commuters.
- Enhanced welfare programmes for staff.
Current employees from SBS Transit affected by this change, estimated to be around 700, will be offered positions with Go-Ahead Singapore under terms no less favourable. The National Transport Workers’ Union has expressed its commitment to ensuring a seamless transition for these workers.
Looking Ahead
With this latest contract, Go-Ahead Singapore expands its workforce to over 2,000 employees and will operate more than 800 buses, including over 270 electric units. Leonard Lee, the Managing Director of Go-Ahead Singapore, shared their enthusiasm for contributing to greener journeys while collaborating with the union to facilitate a smooth transition.
