PORT-AU-PRINCE — The airspace over Haiti’s capital has turned dangerous after a Spirit Airlines flight was struck by gunfire on 11 November 2023, forcing a diversion to the Dominican Republic. The incident, which left a flight attendant with minor injuries, highlights the escalating chaos in Port-au-Prince as armed gangs increasingly target aviation routes.
Frequent Attacks on Civilian Aircraft
Spirit Airlines confirmed that the plane, en route from Florida, sustained damage, although no passengers were harmed. Footage appeared online showing the bullet’s entry point near the back exit door, indicating the severity of the ongoing security crisis.
In response to the escalating violence, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has temporarily banned all civilian flights to Haiti for one month, reflecting severe safety concerns.
Impact on Airline Operations
- JetBlue and American Airlines also reported disruptions, with several of their flights hit by gunfire in recent days.
- All flights at the Toussaint Louverture International Airport are currently halted, according to the US embassy.
- Passengers aboard the Spirit flight were moved to another aircraft to return to Fort Lauderdale.
Political Instability Fuels Violence
The turmoil comes during a time of significant political instability in Haiti, exacerbated by poverty and recurring natural disasters. Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime was recently sworn in amid ongoing power struggles, whilst gangs control roughly 80 per cent of Port-au-Prince.
Last month, over 1,200 people were reported killed due to gang violence, according to the United Nations, demonstrating that these groups are deeply embedded in the societal fabric, often perpetrating robberies, kidnappings, and vandalism.
International Response and Future Outlook
The international community, while concerned, faces challenges in providing effective support. The Kenyan-led police force has been deployed to assist local forces, but with violence increasing, their effectiveness is in question.
Haitians are in desperate need of stability and safety… yet personal interests among political factions continue to impede progress. According to a State Department spokesperson, it’s critical for the transitional government to focus on governance and restoring order.
