Huang Yiliang Fined for Traffic Incident Resulting in Cyclist Injury

SINGAPORE: Former actor Ng Aik Leong, better known by his stage name Huang Yiliang, found himself in hot water once again following a traffic incident. The 63-year-old was sentenced to a fine of S$3,000 and disqualified from driving for five years after causing grievous hurt to a cyclist.

The Incident Details

The court heard that on 20 September 2023, at approximately 8:20 PM, Huang was driving his van from a slip road at Cavenagh Road onto Bukit Timah Road. The 27-year-old victim was cycling along Bukit Timah Road when Huang’s vehicle collided with him. According to reports, the cyclist had the right of way and was struck on his left side as Huang failed to stop at the “give way” line.

The Cyclist’s Injuries

  • Fractured right elbow
  • Bruising and swelling on the elbow
  • Received seven days of hospitalisation leave

After the collision, the victim was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital and later required further medical attention, leading to a total of 50 days of hospitalisation leave.

Past Legal Troubles

This isn’t the first time Huang has faced legal scrutiny. In February 2021, he was sentenced to 10 months in jail for assaulting a Bangladeshi worker—a case that ended with him needing to compensate the victim.

In an earlier incident in 2012, Ng was fined S$3,000 for assaulting a woman over her dog’s mess. These previous convictions make this traffic incident particularly concerning, as it highlights a pattern of disregard for public safety.

Legal Consequences

Deputy Public Prosecutor Kevin Yong sought a fine between S$3,000 and S$4,000 and a five-year driving ban. The court noted that Huang, although a first-time offender in this particular case, had a troubling history. Huang’s legal defence claimed that his vision was compromised due to oncoming lights during the incident.

As the court proceedings come to an end, Huang Yiliang’s recent experiences serve as a stark reminder of the responsibility that comes with driving and the potential consequences of reckless behaviour on the roads.
