SINGAPORE: In alarming cases involving foreign nationals on flights to Singapore, two incidents have captured public attention in recent weeks.
Theft on Board
A 30-year-old Indonesian man is facing charges for allegedly stealing a wallet from a fellow passenger during a flight to Singapore. According to the Singapore Police Force (SPF), the incident occurred on 16 March 2024, around 4.55am. The victim had stored her wallet in an overhead compartment, and the suspect subsequently used her debit card at various retail outlets in Changi Airport.
The victim quickly reported the unauthorized transactions through her banking application, prompting a swift police response that led to his arrest before he could leave Singapore. The man now faces up to three years in jail, a fine, or both if found guilty.
Inappropriate Exposure Incident
In a disturbing related incident, a 23-year-old man named Brilliant Angjaya was sentenced to three weeks in jail for exposing himself to a cabin crew member on a Singapore Airlines flight from China on 23 January 2024. After consuming alcohol during the flight, Angjaya, emboldened by intoxication, attempted to film himself while exposing his genitals.
The cabin crew member, who cannot be named due to a gag order, was shocked upon encountering the incident. Angjaya was arrested upon arrival at Changi Airport, and court proceedings revealed aggravating factors, including his intoxication and the nature of the offence. Despite the fleeting nature of the act, the court considered the seriousness of the crime committed against a public transport worker.
Responses from Authorities
The SPF reiterated its zero tolerance policy towards theft and inappropriate behaviour on aircraft. Assistant Commissioner M Malathi stated, “It was fortunate that the passenger had enabled notifications on her banking app, allowing her to quickly report the unauthorized transactions of her debit card.” Additionally, the court acknowledged Angjaya’s remorse and cooperation but maintained that such actions must be taken seriously.
- Both incidents highlight issues of safety and respect on flights.
- Passengers are encouraged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities without delay.
