SINGAPORE — In a case that highlights the consequences of uncontrolled anger, former journalist Jessinta Tan Suat Lin, 50, has pleaded guilty to multiple charges after a violent confrontation with a neighbour and alarming threats to her family. Tan’s actions, stemming from a dispute over her neighbour’s exercise routine, have raised concerns about mental health and domestic violence.
Assault Over Skipping Rope
On the evening of 16 February 2024, Tan, residing in Westmont condominium along West Coast Road, became frustrated when her neighbour, a 26-year-old master’s student, exercised by skipping rope near the swimming pool. Tan’s son wanted to rest, prompting her to approach the younger woman and request that she stop. When the request was ignored, Tan unleashed a torrent of abuse.
- Tan threw five to six eggs at her neighbour from her apartment.
- She later confronted the victim with a mop, hitting her and breaking the aluminium handle in the process.
- The assault resulted in injuries that required the victim to seek hospital treatment.
Escalating Threats to Family
The violent outburst didn’t end there. Two months later, during a heated argument about parenting styles with her husband, Tan alarmingly confessed to their son that she might kill his father in his sleep. This chilling comment was overheard by her husband, spurring him to report her threats to the authorities.
Legal Consequences
Tan pleaded guilty to three charges, which include voluntarily causing hurt and committing a rash act. The court is considering two additional charges, with sentencing set for 11 February 2024. She is currently out on bail set at S$10,000.
Her lawyer, Ramachandran Shiever Subramaniam, emphasised that Tan is a loving mother suffering from anxiety and depression, suggesting that her violent actions were not typical of her character. The court has called for an assessment to determine her suitability for a mandatory treatment order, which could direct her towards psychiatric treatment rather than prison time.
Civic Importance of Mental Health
This case underscores the need for better support systems for those struggling with mental health issues. As Singapore society places increased emphasis on mental well-being, incidents like these serve as a reminder that frustrations, if unaddressed, can lead to serious implications for both victims and offenders alike.
As the case unfolds, many will be observing not just the legal repercussions for Tan but also the broader conversations about mental health support in Singapore.
